“APPENDIX A”  Report of the 179th General AssemblyCommissioner

To: North Central Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Session with the Georgetown CP Church, Georgetown, Illinois October 9-10, 2009.

I would like to thank the Presbytery for the opportunity to serve as commissioner to the 179th General Assembly.  This General Assembly was held in Memphis, TN on June 15-19, 2009.  Sam Suddarth, Elder at Nolensville CP church, was endorsed by Columbia Presbytery and elected Moderator.  I have known Sam for many years and feel he will be an outstanding moderator to represent our Denomination.  I served on the Committee for Special Concerns and Future General Assembly Planning.  We had several days of discussion and I was Amazed at the things we found to debate about.  I found the opportunity to serve on this committee a learning experience.  Since this was my first General Assembly to attend I cannot express what all I brought back regarding the workings of our denominational system but I was blessed by the experience and honored to be asked to represent North Central Presbytery.

Respectfully Submitted,

Rev. Melissa Goodloe

A discussion was held on how we, as a board, can best help the candidates under our care to prepare for the ministry.  In a effort to get to know the candidates better, and to understand their strengths and weaknesses, we feel an evaluation needs to be made of each candidate who comes under the care of the Presbytery.   We make the following recommendation:

Recommendation 1:  That each candidates, upon coming under the care of the Presbytery, be given a psychological and social evaluation, to be administered by a licensed counselor.

Recognizing that we live in a changing world and that we need to take steps to protect the presbytery, the churches, and the individual church members, we make the following recommendation:

Recommendation 2:  That Presbytery run a background check on each candidate who seeks to come under the care of the Presbytery, and on every ordained minister who seeks to unite with North Central Presbytery.

Recommendation 3:  That ordering the background check on candidates and transferring ministers be the responsibility of the Stated Clerk.

The Board of Ministry’s spring retreat will be held February 25-27, 2010.  We would like to extend the retreat by one day to allow more one-on-one time with the candidates.  We hope to develop a 5-year rotation of workshops that will help prepare the candidates to more-effectively minister to their congregations upon ordination.

North Central Women’s Ministry Fall Meeting

October 9-10, 2009

Meeting with Georgetown C. P. Church

Georgetown, Illinois

Theme:  Gifted to Serve

Friday, October 9

Welcome and call to order by President Nancy Gordon.  She read the theme scripture 1 Peter 4:10-11 and a poem entitled “Precious Gifts”.  Nancy offered the constituting prayer.  Each lady present gave her name and home church.  We sang the theme hymn “Make Me a Blessing” led by Joan Winkle of the Georgetown Church and accompanied by June Smith of the Shiloh Church.

Sara McCawley from the Lincoln Church gave the devotional using scripture from 1 Kings 17.  She shared how the widow opened her home and the last of the food with the prophet Elijah during a time of severe famine.  Because she was gifted to serve through hospitality, her supply of flour and oil never ran out.  Her son, who became ill and died, was restored to her through Elijah’s intercession with God.  Sara reminded us to listen and to use our gifts for God.

Credential Report #1 was given by Juanita Nichols with a total of 12 in attendance.

Treasurer, Anna Ruth Long, distributed copies of the financial report and the proposed budget.

President Nancy Gordon presented a Perpetual Membership to Lucy Becker.  It was in memory of her husband, Albert, to the Missions Ministry Team.

The recommendations of the Executive Committee were read at this time.  They listed the Consecration Offerings and Blessing Box Offering for the Spring and Fall 2010 meetings.  The other recommendation was voted on at that time. Which was to change the Consecration Offering to be taken in the evening service from the Laos Vision School to Delight and Kenneth Hopson.  Delight was speaking in the evening service and we felt that the offering should go for their expenses. It was approved by the body.

The Executive Committee appointed the committees, while the ladies sang choruses.

Committee Appointments:

Correspondence:  Lucy Becker, Marilyn Tisdale, and Karen Allen

Auditing:  Ruth Louder and Carolyn Austin

State of Works:  Each lady to share what their local CPWMs are doing

Nancy Gordon passed out copies of the Standing Rules.  She asked that they look them over and consider any changes that would generate more interest in the work.  She also wanted us to be in prayer about the future of CPWM.  No one has agreed to serve as President-Elect.  The terms of the ladies now serving as officers all expire in the Spring of 2011.

Recess for Committee Work

Saturday, October 10, 2009

President Nancy Gordon called the meeting to order.  Past-President, Lucy Becker, opened the meeting with prayer.  Jo Ann Shugert shared plans for the upcoming convention.  Nancy Gordon gave her report of the last convention.

Credential Report #2 was given by Juanita Nichols with a total of 11.  She then shared the highlights of the Midwest Synod Fall Retreat hosted by Covenant Region at Pennyrile Forest State Park in Kentucky.

Treasurer, Anna Ruth Long, reported that the offering last night for the Hopsons was $1,190.00.  She will hold that amount for awhile for any additional funds.  The Blessing Box offering was taken.  It will go to Scholarships for Colombian Elementary Students.  The amount collected was $257.00.  This will also be held in case late collections are sent.

Ruth Louder, a member of the nominating committee, reported that she had not found anyone to serve as President-Elect.  The Auditing and Correspondence Reports were given.

There was discussion about the 2011 Midwest Synod Fall Retreat to be hosted by our Region.  Possible meeting place, an old convent at Ferdinand, Indiana, was to be investigated by the Executive Committee.

After much discussion, the body decided to revise Standing Rule #1, to meet in the fall at a time decided by the Executive Committee, separate from the meeting of Presbytery.  We will meet on a Saturday allowing working ladies to attend and women elders not to have to make a choice of attending the CPWM or Presbytery.  Good Prospect Church at Trilla, Illinois was to be the first meeting place with the Executive Committee to decide on the program.

Standing Rule #9 concerning committee appointments will be changed.  We will no longer have a Credential, State of Work, or Resolutions Committee.  A Correspondence Committee will include Resolutions in their report.

Prayer requests were shared and the theme scripture read.  Nancy Gordon closed the meeting with prayer.
